Fact or Fiction: Finding Healthy Snacks for on the go is Possible?

Fact.

Two years ago, the answer would have been fiction, but after literally years of researching and trying out different snacks, I have finally found it possible to eat clean while on the road.  Though what works for me, may not work for you, it’s all about options and the ability to switch out one ingredient for another to better suit your preferences. For example, if you’re more of a vanilla fan then a chocolate fan, then find a protein powder that comes in your flavor of choice so that you enjoy the snack you are eating.  Or, if peanut butter is not your cup of tea, then perhaps add in a fruit, like strawberries or a banana.  I have found that frozen strawberries (without added sugar) give a nice sweet flavor to my smoothies and I will add them in from time to time when looking for a kick to my snack.  Shown above is my protein powder of choice.  With 24g of protein and only 4g of carbs, the Quest line of protein powders is an awesome option and the flavors are not chalky at all, but rather smooth and quite delicious.  The Muscle Egg (made up of pure egg whites that can be drank, cooked, baked, etc) is what I substitute for water when I am looking to increase my protein count.  There are many different flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, fruity, that can add an additional element of taste to your smoothie.  Plus, it adds another 25g of protein to my smoothie so my snack now has a whopping 49g of protein and easily holds me over for hours which is quite helpful when traveling and I’m not quite sure when my next meal will be.

Traveling for work can be quite stressful when thinking about when my next snack or meal will be.  That’s why I always pre-plan my snacks prior to packing and then all my little friends accompany me on my trip and everyone is happy!  Pure Protein crunch balls (in either chocolate or peanut butter), Pure Protein bars (my favorite is chocolate peanut butter…does anyone see a trend here?), and Lenny and Larry cookies (in more flavors then I can count) are my snacks of choice while on the road.  The one disclaimer here – if you are trying to keep your carb count low, then the Lenny and Larry cookies may not fit in your regimen as they have nearly 60g of carbs!  So, I often eat half of one prior to a workout and then the other half after a workout.  It’s all about fitting your snacks into your meal plan, not letting them derail your plan.  Furthermore, if you will be traveling for days, make sure to pack enough to cover your needs for the entire duration of your trip, that way you aren’t constantly tempted to cheat and you have delicious snacks to enjoy.

For the meat eaters (my apologies to the vegetarians) I recommend Duke’s Original Recipe smoked shorty sausages.  Without any added gross stuff, you know what I mean, these little guys pack a lot of flavor and won’t break your teeth when you bite into them.  Plus, with a serving size of two sausages, they give you 9g of protein and make for a delicious addition to your daily snacking.  Lastly, they don’t have too high of a sodium count so you don’t have to worry too much about water retention or bloating.  I often throw these little guys into my purse and have them on hand for those moments of pure hunger.  The Duke brand also carries other flavors, so if you’re looking for something spicy or with some zest, feel free to try the other options out there.

The moral of the story is: if you plan your snacks, then you CAN stay on track with your eating.  It just takes a little time and effort and once you find your snacks of choice, then this will become second nature.  Try new things.  Try new flavors.  Try new ingredients.  I promise you that clean snacking is possible.  And all of the items mentioned above can be purchased nearly anywhere – Target, Wal-Mart, your local gym, or online (Muscle Egg can be purchased via its website or on Amazon).  The price points vary but all options are highly affordable.  Instead of your daily Starbucks, perhaps put that $5 towards a healthy snacking option – I promise, you won’t be disappointed.  Please comment below with your favorite snacks…I’m always looking for new alternatives!
